DUMBO Neighborhood Guide

Does DUMBO have it all? Some would say so, thanks to the sweeping views of Manhattan and the chic loft spaces you see everywhere you look. A true mixture of sass and class, DUMBO is hip, historic, and highly in demand. With a mix of converted warehouses and vintage lofts, the skyline views are simply unmatched in most of New York City. You’ll find trendy bars and shops on every corner, beautifully manicured green spaces on the waterfront, and incredible, historic enclaves such as the cobblestone streets of Vinegar Hill.

Architecture and landmarks

DUMBO is today considered one of the premier districts in NYC for artists, as evidenced by a cluster of art galleries including the famous Klompching Gallery and its non-profit counterpart, St. Ann’s Warehouse.

DUMBO was originally an industrial district that’s only been transformed into a residential area in the past few decades. As a result, the architectural styles are diverse and include everything from Greek Revival to converted lofts. One of the most popular landmarks in DUMBO is the extant tracks from the trolley car that used to travel the cobblestone streets.

With only four 1-2 family homes in DUMBO, and more than 1,100 condo units, it’s easy to see that DUMBOs industrial past has not made way for a more serene, neighborhood-like atmosphere. Though it’s known as one of the techiest places in Brooklyn, there are only seven office buildings in the neighborhood. Co-ops haven’t yet gotten a foothold (there are only seven of them), but there are more than 860 rentals, 30 retail units, and 15 mixed use buildings.

Things to do

Things to do

Though DUMBO is one of the most popular and highly-sought after neighborhoods in Brooklyn, there has yet to be an influx of nightlife venues or fine dining options. This may be an advantage for residents who want to keep the neighborhood quiet, but a disadvantage for excitement seekers.

That said, there are plenty of charming, low-key eateries including Love & Dough, with their Neapolitan specialties, Pedro’s Mexican Bar and Restaurant, a family-spot best known for their unique sandwiches, and Archway Café, which recently added dinner service to their already popular breakfast and brunch service.

Things to do

Sports fans gather at The Bridges to watch the big game and enjoy one of numerous draft beers on tap, and the Olympia Wine Bar has long been a favorite of those seeking an affordable glass of wine and an incredible view.

What DUMBO lacks in nightlife it makes up for in shopping options, including the famous Trunk, a boutique that sells clothing, furniture, and jewelry from local designers and artists, and P.S. Bookshop, which buys and sells rare books on every topic you can imagine.

Things to do

The Brooklyn Bridge Park is located in DUMBO along the East River and is a favorite spot for views of Manhattan as well as rides on the indoor merry-go-round. There isn’t a NYC Public Library branch in DUMBO, but there are several in nearby Brooklyn Heights.
