Overall, a total of 14 Midwestern cities can offer more than the national median square footage, which stands around 1,820 square feet. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Conversely,&nbsp;California dominates the list of&nbsp;places&nbsp;where $400,000 might buy the least space.&nbsp;Here,&nbsp;six of the top&nbsp;10 cities have the most expensive square footage&nbsp;\u2014&nbsp;namely,&nbsp;San Jose, Irvine&nbsp;and&nbsp;San&nbsp;Diego, among others. Nearby,&nbsp;<strong>Toledo<\/strong>&nbsp;offers 3,622 square feet with homes priced at $110 per square foot.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The trend continues across other Midwestern cities. The only exception on the more spacious end is <strong>Bakersfield<\/strong>, where the same budget could secure almost 2,000 square feet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In&nbsp;<strong>San Francisco<\/strong>,&nbsp;that budget might only&nbsp;cover&nbsp;a&nbsp;393-square-foot&nbsp;home&nbsp;with prices exceeding $1,000 per square foot and a median sale price of $1.38 million.&nbsp;Additionally, single&nbsp;family homes&nbsp;here&nbsp;account for only 18% of the city\u2019s housing stock, pushing most buyers toward smaller, more space-limited options.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Further&nbsp;South, space remains similarly constrained:&nbsp;In&nbsp;<strong>San Jose<\/strong>, $400,000 can potentially buy only&nbsp;<strong>480 square feet<\/strong>.
