Bakersfield City Guide

Bakersfield is located in the middle of Kern County, the most oil productive county in the state. It’s also one of the top five counties for agricultural production. As a result, the oil and agricultural sectors are major employers in the city and numerous related corporate and regional headquarters are located here. The manufacturing and distribution sectors are also growing, with companies attracted by inexpensive real estate prices and proximity to two ports. Bakersfield is the most populated city sporting California’s lowest legally allowed sales tax of 7.25%. The National Civic League named Bakersfield one of ten All-American cities.

Architecture and landmarks

Seven Oaks and Stockdale are both popular neighborhoods in Southwest Bakersfield, while Central Bakersfield is home to the oldest buildings in the city. Central Bakersfield is also the location of the Arts District and several community colleges, as well as the central business district. Well known buildings include the Kern County Black Chamber of Commerce, Lowell Place Senior Center, and Ebony Counseling Center. Mostly residential, South Bakersfield is home to Planz Park, the Eleanor Wilson Library, Valley Plaza Mall, and South High School, with the Kern County Fairgrounds a popular attraction.

Transit

There are three freeways that pass through Bakersfield: SR 99, SR 58 and SR 178. There is an I-5 bypass a few miles west of the city. Bakersfield is one of the most populated cities in the country that doesn’t have a direct link to an interstate. Bus service is provided by Golden Empire Transit. They offer 18 bus routes within the city and buses to other communities in Kern County. Amtrak passenger train service is offered on the San Joaquin Route, with a stop in downtown Bakersfield.

Schools

The largest in the state, Kern High School District covers 35,000 students in 28 schools – 15 of which are high schools located in Bakersfield. There are private school options too, including Bakersfield Christian High School and Garces Memorial High School. California State University Bakersfield was founded in 1965, opened in 1970, and has an average of just under 8,000 students including both the main campus and the satellite campus in Lancaster.

Health

Bakersfield is home to 7 hospitals. They include Mercy Hospital, San Joaquin Community Hospital, Bakersfield Heart Hospital, and Kern Medical Center.

Safety

The Bakersfield Police Department has more than 360 officers and 100 non-officers on staff. They serve a population of more than 800,000 and split the city into an east area and a west area. In 2015, the FBI reported 1,810 violent crimes in the city and 15,559 property crimes.

Some of the most historic and well respected restaurants in Bakersfield are Basque. They include Benji’s, Noriega’s, Woolgrowers, and Narduccis. There are five movie theaters in the city, all of which have multiple screens. The Starplex Cinema 6 shows older movies at a discount, and the historic Fox Theater is a popular venue for concerts.

Things to do

The Kern County Museum offers regional artifacts including Miocene era marine fossils and a hands-on exhibit demonstrating how oil is extracted. Breed horse shows happen all year long in Bakersfield, and California’s Scottish Games and Clan Gatherings are held here every spring.

Things to do

Locals can enjoy the three-day Kern County Basque Festival every Memorial Day weekend, with food, dancing, music, and games. The Kern County Fair is held in late September and highlights agricultural and animal husbandry in the region.
