The Verizon Building, once known as the Barclay-Vesey Building and as the New York Telephone Company Building, is located in Manhattan's TriBeCa neighborhood. It is 32 stories high and its construction was completed in 1927. Designed by architect Ralph Walker, it is an Art Deco-style building with a thick masonry exterior and has been referred to as one of the most significantly designed skyscrapers in the world. Inside the building is a veined marble lobby, ceiling murals, travertine floors, and inlaid bronze medallions. The exterior's intricate designs include foliage, babies, and a bell above the door.
While it was historically used primarily as an office building, the top 22 of its 32 floors were purchased in 2013 with the goal of converting them to condominiums. Renovations in 2004 earned a restoration firm a preservation award by the New York Landmarks Conservancy, it's been designated as New York City Landmark since 1999, and ten years later it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. There are many seafood restaurants nearby, including several sushi spots. Elementary P.S. 234 is within walking distance, and two middle and high school institutions are also close-by in Battery Park City.
