Building Description

The New York City Housing Authority had been in the business of public housing for only a few years when plans were hatched for the Albany Houses. The St. John's Home for Boys ? which had stood since 1868 and covered most of the block between St. Marks Avenue, Troy Avenue, Park Place, and Albany Avenue ? was bulldozed for the new housing development which opened in 1950. Most of the city's early public housing building efforts resulted in low-rise buildings less than six stories high. The Albany Houses, designed by architects Fellheimer, Wagner & Vollmer, were an early effort to build housing complexes under the towers in a park concept.

1400 Bergen Street is actually part of Phase II of the Albany Houses master plan, a trio of pentagonal towers built in 1957 on the north side of St. Marks Avenue. Two brick towers are 14 stories in height and the third has 13 stories. Together they offer 396 apartments. This slice of Brooklyn's Crown Heights is known for residential neighborhoods, convenient to schools, services, and mass transportation. The Brooklyn Children's Museum is just two blocks from 1400 Bergen Street.
