Building Description

The Pythian was built in 1927, originally commissioned for the fraternity known as The Knights of Pythias, which had been founded some sixty years earlier. The designer was Thomas Lamb, who often designed movie palaces of the era, including the Audubon Theater. The Pythian ultimately rented out space to Decca Records, and in 1954, Bill Haley and the Comets recorded the iconic "Rock Around the Clock" at the Pythian. In 1983, it was converted to a residential co-op and now boasts 87 units across seven stories.

The exterior has unique touches of polychrome terracotta and buff brick, while the lobby is done in black marble and made to look like a scene out of Egypt. Because of the original intent of the building, some units have fascinatingly high ceilings. Cats and dogs are allowed and there is both an elevator and a full-time doorman. Other amenities include a bike room and a live-in super. The 72nd Street subway station is just over one-tenth of a mile away, while the nearest public school, PS 199 Jessie Isador Straus, is just a block away.
