Building Description

The New York City Housing Authority used three Brooklyn acres around 393 Powell Street to build two senior residential towers in 1970. One rises 25 stories high, the other 10. The two apartment buildings feature alternating sections of white and brown brick on either side of Dumont Avenue in Brownsville. The complex was named for pioneering African-American scholar Carter Woodson, who founded Negro History Week in 1926, a celebration that eventually grew into Black History Month. The 25-story 393 Powell Street comprises 288 apartments with an average size of 613 square feet.

393 Powell Street is adjacent to the Rosetta Gaston Senior Center, and just steps away is Livonia Park with its mix of shaded lawns and hardscaped plazas lined with benches. Markets and shops are convenient, and the B14 bus for Crown Heights stops on Dumont Avenue between the two towers. The Junius Street subway station serves the 2, 3, 4, and 5 trains at the end of the block. Schools in the area include P.S. 174, Hyde Leadership Charter School, School of the Future Brooklyn, Brownsville Collegiate Charter School, FDNY High School for Fire and Life Safety, and Achievement First East New York Charter School.

Eliza Theiss, Apr 23, 2026 $4.6M Hudson Yards Maintains Top Spot, Luxury Sales in Malba Set $2.5M Price Record for Queens
Despite prices declining, Hudson Yards remained the most expensive NYC neighborhood, but TriBeCa’s growth closed the gap to under $400,000, while Malba set a new historic price record for Queens at $2.5 million, securing the highest ranking ever for the borough at #5.
Eliza Theiss, Mar 19, 2026 Cheaper in the City? Nearly 100 Communities in Suburban NYC Surpass $1M
New Yorkers planning a move to the suburbs increasingly find their options limited, after suburban home values shot up twice as fast as NYC medians over the last decade. While larger homes and better prices were long the norm outside the five boroughs, today, many NYC buyers find their option restricted to a handful of suburban markets.
