Building Description

Harlem resident James Weldon Johnson, equal parts attorney, civil rights activist, and author, was the first African-American professor at New York University and the namesake of the 14-story apartment complex at 1844 Lexington Avenue. Built in 1948, the James Weldon Johnson Houses brought 1,308 units to this corner of Spanish Harlem and were the childhood home of world boxing champion Hector ?Macho? Camacho. The 1844 Lexington Avenue component of the housing complex offers 720 apartments and 4 commercial units that house 4,723 square feet of office space among other uses. An attractive iron fence with brick pillars frames the complex, which is also home to the Johnson Community Center and the Johnson Playground.
