Building Description
The New York City Housing Authority constructed the Gravesend Houses at 2719 West 33 Street in 1954, on the north shore of Coney Island. There are 15 seven-story buildings in the block between the curving Bayview Avenue to the north and east, Neptune Avenue to the south, and West 33rd Street to the west. The brick towers around the perimeter are designed in an elongated rectangular style and the middle apartment buildings are constructed in a cruciform pattern. The Gravesend Houses took a direct hit from Hurricane Sandy and relief funds have provided a new boiler plant and generators, flood-proofing and rainscreen-style cladding to upgrade insulation.
2719 West 33 Street is adjacent to Kaiser Park and steps away from the sandy shores of Coney Island Creek Park. Food markets and local services are nearby. Schools within walking distance of the Gravesend Houses include the Mark Twain School for the Gifted and Talented and PS 188, the Michael E Berdy School. The buses on Neptune Avenue provide a short ride to the New York City subway system and the D, F, N, and Q lines.
