Building Description

At 3002 Surf Avenue, three blocks of Coney Island beachfront were converted into affordable housing by the New York City Housing Authority in 1957. The five brick towers ? each 14 stories high and oriented perpendicularly to the ocean ? provide 535 apartment units. In 2017, Hurricane Sandy relief funds contributed $90 million to the Coney Island Houses for new roofs, new boilers and water-resistant electrical systems. Residents now also benefit from fresh landscaping and a new community room.

In addition to the beach and the Riegelmann Boardwalk just out the front door, the Coney Island YMCA is across the street from 3002 Surf Avenue, while the ballfields and sports courts of Kaiser Park are two blocks away. The Coney Island Houses are served by School District 21 and zoned for P.S. 288, I.S. 96, and Abraham Lincoln High School. Food markets are nearby, and bus service is just steps away, including the B36, X28 and X38 lines on Surf Avenue. 0.85 miles away, the Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue subway station gives access to the D, F, N, and Q trains.
