Building Description

Built in 1905, 240 Centre Street was formerly the headquarters of the New York City Police Department between 1909 and 1973. It was converted to a residential co-op in 1988 by Ehrenkranz Group and Eckstut. It has 55 units spread across six stories ranging in size from 1,000 to more than 6,000 sq ft. A full-time resident manager, concierge, and doorman are all included; cats and dogs are allowed; there is an elevator, a fitness room, and a communal garden on site.

The nearest subway station is just 0.14 miles away. The building was designated a New York City landmark in 1978 and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. Not surprisingly given its former use, the Police Building is in the center of a high-energy area with convenient shopping and restaurant options, as well as easy access to Columbus Park. Local restaurants and bakeries abound, the majority of them Italian in nature.
