The quintet of 14- and 15-story apartment towers are scattered in the superblock between West 31st and West 33rd streets and Mermaid and Surf avenues. Located only one block from the Atlantic Ocean in Coney Island, Surfside Gardens was hit hard by Superstorm Sandy and given $41 million in reconstruction money for full roof replacements, back-up generators, and new boilers. The renovation will also bring upgraded playgrounds and activity areas, improved lighting on the property, and state-of-the-art security doors and cameras.
The 597-unit Surfside Gardens also includes a community center, recently updated with a new kitchen and recreation areas. The Coney Island community is close to Atlantic Ocean beaches, and the Coney Island YMCA is next door.
