Building Description

The Lexington Houses at 1539 Lexington Avenue were the fourth public housing development created after World War II in East Harlem by the New York City Housing Authority. Unlike its predecessors, no residents were relocated in the construction of the Lexington Houses in 1951. The four 15-story brown brick towers, designed with a cruciform footprint, are arranged on a superblock bounded by Park and Third Avenues and East 98th and East 99th Streets. The grounds are landscaped with grassy lawns and curved walking paths, framed by iron fences. 1539 Lexington Avenue features 225 apartments, onsite parking and outdoor sitting areas and playgrounds.

Local shops and services are handy to 1539 Lexington Avenue, and Mount Sinai Hospital is two blocks away. The M101, M102, and M103 bus lines all stop at the Lexington Houses, while the 96 Street Station for the 4 and 6 trains is a five-minute walk down Lexington Avenue. Zoned Schools include P.S. 198 and I.S. 167, but P.S. 77, Restart Academy, Dream Charter School, and The Islamic Cultural Center are also close by.
