Building Description

Built by the New York City Housing Authority in 1939, the Red Hook Houses brought 2,528 apartments to this corner of Red Hook in low-rise apartment buildings. The apartments featured all the latest living conveniences and comprised the largest public housing project in Brooklyn at the time. In 1955, the NYCHA built upon its success across Columbia Street with a trio of 14-story brick towers to provide 345 additional apartments. The development at 135 Richards Street was called the Red Hook West Houses. Red Hook West gained its own notoriety in 1991, when it took a star turn as the backdrop of Straight Out of Brooklyn, the directorial debut of 20-year old Matty Rich.

139 Richards Street overlooks the ballfields and playgrounds of Coffey Park, and is close to local dining and shopping on Van Brunt Street. The Smith-9th Streets subway station and the F and G trains are just a few minutes away on foot, and the on/off ramps of the Gowanus Expressway are right down the street. Red Hook West is zoned for P.S. 15, and additional schools in the area include public options such as P.S. 146, I.S. 448 and South Brooklyn Community High School. Basis Independent Brooklyn, Summit Academy Charter School and Pave Academy Charter School are the closest private institutions.
