The Ingersoll Houses at 118 St. Edwards Street in Brooklyn's Fort Greene neighborhood were one of the first of the New York City Housing Authority's 334 communities. The 20 brick apartment towers of six and eleven stories were constructed in 1944 in two large superblocks divided by Navy Street. The Ingersoll Houses offer 1,826 apartment units, and a freestanding community center has recently been added to the site. In the past decade, renovations have brought new elevator banks, upgraded kitchens, improved flooring and metal stairs. A federal grant of nearly $8 million is targeted for boiler replacement, heating upgrades, and electrical work.
118 St. Edwards Street is across the street from Fort Greene Park, while the ballfields of Commodore John Barry Park are immediately to the north. In addition to convenient bus service ? like the B54 and B62 lines ? the Jay Street-Metrotech station is a short walk away for the A, C and F trains. Access ramps for Exit 29 of the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway are adjacent to the property.
