Building Description

The New York City Housing Authority filled the two blocks between Clymer Street, and Wilson, Wythe and Bedford avenues with six 21-story buildings in an austere modern style in 1965. Named the Independence Towers, the development offers 743 apartments complete with parking lots, playgrounds, and shaded lawns. The onsite Independence Towers Community Center offers child day care services and athletic fields. Upper floor units at the 180-foot towers have views of the Manhattan skyline across the East River. Part of the Independence Towers, 83-85 Taylor Street is managed by the New York City Housing authority and features 372 apartments.

The Independence Towers are next door to the Williamsburg Collegiate Charter School, and the Roebling Playground and Jacob's Ladder Playground are within easy walking distance. Bus lines like B44, B44+, B62 and B67 run directly past the property, and the Marcy Avenue subway station for the J, M, and Z lines is just 0.3 miles from 83-85 Taylor Street. Drivers can reach the Brooklyn Queens Expressway in minutes. Area schools also include Yeshiva Jesode Hatorah, El Puente Academy, J.H.S. 50 and P.S. 110.
