Building Description
Film buffs recognize the Van Dyke Houses at 603 Mother Gaston Boulevard as the setting for the crime thriller Brooklyn's Finest, with an all-star ensemble featuring Don Cheadle, Richard Gere, Ethan Hawke and Wesley Snipes. The development of the three-story and 14-story brick buildings was completed in 1955 with 1,602 units available. Van Dyke Houses welcomed a 12-story residential addition in 2017. It brought 44 one- and 57 two-bedroom apartments designed by Dattner Architects. The project was a $56 million collaboration between the New York City Housing Authority and private companies.
603 Mother Gaston Boulevard also houses a senior center and the Stone Avenue Branch of the Brooklyn Public Library. Van Dyke Houses is convenient for mass transportation, with the B14 line just steps away, and the B60, B20 and B12 within easy walking distance. The Junius Street station serves the 3 train a few quick steps from the complex, while the 4 and L trains can be boarded a short walk away.
