Building Description
The French Hospital at 324 West Street was constructed in 1928 by the French Benevolent Society. Before closing in 1977, the infirmary gained a measure of notoriety as the hospital where baseball immortal Babe Ruth died, and as the emergency room where fictional Don Vito Corleone was treated for gunshot wounds in The Godfather. The French Hospital was one of the last Beaux Arts towers raised in New York City. After its days as a care center came to an end, the property was converted into apartments. Now known as French Apartments, the property features a pair of 13-story towers separated by a garden and playground, for a total of 223 apartments.
