Building Description

237 Nassau Street is where the Brooklyn Navy Yard once operated, part of a 200-acre complex that employed 70,000 workers during World War II. As the Navy Yard transitioned to peacetime, three superblocks were developed by the New York City Housing Authority in the area to house the Farragut Houses. The first tenants moved in during 1951, paying about $40 a month in rent. Named for Civil War admiral David Farragut, the ten brick towers of 13 and 14 stories comprise 1,390 apartments.

There are half a dozen parks and playgrounds within walking distance, and four bus routes run through the Farragut Houses, including the B57, B62, B67, and B69 lines. The F train can be boarded within a five-minute walk from 237 Nassau Street. Stations for the A and C trains are also nearby. Ramps for the Brooklyn Queens Expressway are right next to 237 Nassau Street.
