Building Description

The monumental office and retail building at 330 West 42nd Street has a storied past. Named for publishing giant McGraw-Hill, this has been one of several Manhattan buildings used by the firm, including the earlier residence on tenth, and its more recent corporate home on the Avenue of the Americas.

The McGraw Hill Building was built in the same year as the Empire State Building (1932), and was designed by Raymond Hood, who was responsible for the Rockefeller Center. 330 West 42 Street has been both criticized and heralded for its architecture. Its unique coloring and use of blue-green terracotta tiles makes it stand out as an emerald gem, which fades into the sky. Its clean lines and boldness helped the building achieve prestigious recognition at the International Style exhibition. Perhaps most significantly; this building once housed the offices of Marvel Comics predecessor, and was the home of Capitan America Comics. Located in Clinton, a few steps away from the Lincoln Tunnel Entrance, it's accessible for commuters by car and the A-C-E subway lines. Lunch spots and coffee spots abound on 42nd Street and 8th Avenue.
