Building Description

Originally, this building was a real piano factory established by Steinway & Sons prodigies Wessel, Nickel & Gross. The factory operated from 1874 to the 1930s. The property was reinvented as a 48 unit luxury loft building in 1981. At the time it was the largest market rate development in Clinton-Hell's Kitchen. This NYC co-op is comprised of a group of 6 story buildings. The classic brick buildings are linked by iron sky-bridges and catwalks around an urban oasis. The co-op board claims the area was the inspiration for the 1950's musical West Side Story.

When The Piano Factory was redeveloped by Richard Klein and Charles West they included rooftop retreats, gardens, and residential units with balconies and even penthouses with glass ceilings. From this 454 West 46th St. location residents are just moments from the best of Hell's Kitchen's restaurant row, endless performing arts options, and the buzz of Times Square, the Port Authority Terminal, 9th Ave. and 46th Street M11 bus stop, and Pier 86 on the Hudson with the Intrepid Sea, Air, & Space Museum. A couple blocks away, PS 51 serves children in PK up to 5th grade and has a focus on performing arts classes.
