With an innovative design imitated the world over since construction was completed in 1930, The San Remo is a 28-story, 138-unit co-op building on the Upper West Side. Designed by famous architect Emery Roth, it was a hotel up until 1972 when it was converted to a co-op. The first 17 floors are all one building, but at the 18th it splits into two 10-story towers.
The one-becomes-two style has been often imitated around the world. Many of its prewar details remain, much to the delight of its residents, who enter through two huge lobbies and head upstairs via both private and semi-private elevators manned by white-gloved doormen and elevator men. While the small details are of years gone by, the community center, laundry facilities, additional storage units, and fitness club are all as modern as they come. East-facing apartments have a picturesque view of Central Park's Lake, while patrons of the arts are just half a block north of the Lincoln Center.
