Upper West Side Neighborhood Guide

This is the neighborhood that created the image of classic Manhattan residential living. An elegant brownstone here. A stunning apartment tower there. All in the shadow of Central Park on one side and Riverside Park on the other. The job, the city''s nightlife and shopping are an easy ride away, but the Upper West Side is also a place where you can raise a family, walk the dog and escape the hectic pace of New York life. And keep an eye out for the many celebrities that live along these stunning streets.

Architecture and landmarks

The blocks adjacent to Central Park are lined with some of America's most delectable high-rise apartment buildings. This real estate market includes the wedding cake confection of the Kenilworth Apartments, the French Gothic Dakota where Lennon was shot, and the Art Deco tower at 55 Central Park West that became famous as the "Ghostbusters" building. The Beaux Arts-styled American Museum of Natural History housing a celebrated collection of dinosaurs is a memorial to Theodore Roosevelt; his father helped found the institution in 1869. The Interborough Rapid Transit Company (IRT) preserves its unique Flemish Renaissance control house at Broadway and Amsterdam Avenue, south of 72nd Street, which was in use from the first days of the subway in 1904.

Transport

The Upper West Side would not exist without public transportation. The IRT stops along Broadway and the IND Eighth Avenue Line collects passengers along Central Park West. The 1 local train and the 2 and 3 express trains all service the Upper West Side via Broadway and the A, B, C and D trains operate under Central Park West. Five different bus routes traverse the Upper West Side from north to south and crosstown routes are available at the north and south ends of Central Park.

Schools

More than 200,000 people live in the Upper West Side, served by six zoned primary schools. While no middle schools are zoned in the neighborhood, residents have about a dozen private and public school options. The Julliard School, the nation's first music academy, moved to Broadway at 65th Street in its fifth year in 1910 and has been there ever since. Columbia University is just to the north and some in the real estate community consider its campus in Morningside Heights to be part of the Upper West Side proper.

Health

Health care services are liberally sprinkled throughout the Upper West Side from general care facilities to nationally-recognized private specialists. Columbia University and Mount Sinai also contribute health expertise to the neighborhood.

Safety

The Upper West Side is the responsibility of the 20th and 24th Precincts, which in 2015 saw a crime rate of 8.51 and 9.56 per 1,000 residents, respectively. That makes the neighborhood the safest in all Manhattan.

Things to do

At some point Upper West Side residents can all be found building picnic lunches at fabled gourmet food purveyor Zabar's and heading for Central Park. The most famous urban greenspace in America, it is on the front step of the Upper West Side housing for 51 blocks. Bracketing the neighborhood in public recreation space is Riverside Park along the Hudson River where residents can take advantage of playgrounds, a skate park and the West 87th Street Dog Run.

The neighborhood will never be celebrated for its crazy nightlife but an evening out in Lincoln Center remains one of the great cultural adventures America has to offer. The complex now includes performance halls for the New York Philharmonic, the Metropolitan Opera, the School of American Ballet, the Film Society of Lincoln Center and more.

Visiting the Hayden Planetarium in the American Museum of National History is practically a rite of passage in New York City. In Morningside Heights along Riverside Drive is Grant's Tomb, the final resting place of Ulysses S. Grant and his wife Julia and one of the country's most underrated shrines.
