Building Description

The New York City Housing Authority undertook one of its most ambitious apartment projects to date with the Taft Houses at 1337 5 Avenue in 1962, adding 1,464 apartment units to Spanish Harlem. Named for United States senator Robert A. Taft ? a champion of affordable public housing ? the nine 19-story brick towers were designed by architects Del Young, Moscowitz and Rosenberg. The Taft Houses occupy two Manhattan blocks bounded by 112th and 115th streets and Fifth and Park avenues. The grounds are attractively landscaped with shade trees and iron fencing.

Central Park is two quick blocks from 1337 5 Avenue and Marcus Garvey Park is also close by. A variety of Spanish Harlem shopping and dining experiences spreads out around the Taft Houses. Crosstown bus service is steps away with the M1 line, and the BXM2, BXM3, BXM9, and BXM10 lines are also close by. The 6 train is a quick walk away at Lexington Avenue and 116th Station, with the 3 and D also within walking distance.
