Building Description
The New York City Housing Authority undertook one of its most ambitious apartment complexes to date with the Taft Houses at 1695 Madison Avenue. When the nine 19-story brick towers completed in 1962, they added 1,464 apartments to East Harlem. The housing complex was named for United States senator Robert A. Taft, a champion of affordable public housing developments. Designed by architects DeYoung, Moscowitz and Rosenberg, The Taft Houses occupy two Manhattan blocks with attractively landscaped grounds, shade trees and iron fencing.
Central Park is two quick blocks from 1695 Madison Avenue, and Marcus Garvey Park is also close by. The variety of Spanish Harlem shopping and dining experiences spread out around the Taft Houses, and crosstown bus service is steps away. Lexington Avenue subway stations for the 6 train are handy from either the south or north side of the property.
