The New York City Housing Authority undertook one of its most ambitious apartment complexes to date with the Taft Houses at 1695 Madison Avenue. When the nine 19-story brick towers completed in 1962, they added 1,464 apartments to East Harlem. The housing complex was named for United States senator Robert A. Taft, a champion of affordable public housing developments. Designed by architects DeYoung, Moscowitz and Rosenberg, The Taft Houses occupy two Manhattan blocks with attractively landscaped grounds, shade trees and iron fencing.
