The E.V. Haughwout Building is a five-story commercial building located in SoHo that dates back to the 1850s. Cast iron dominates the design initiated by John P. Gaynor in 1857. Daniel D. Badger's Architectural Iron Works equipped it with such. The building was first the home of Eder V. Haughwout's high-end store which sold among other things, imported cut glass and its own hand-painted china. Perhaps its most famous client was Mary Todd Lincoln, who bought her White House china there.
The building is also well known for housing the first-ever successful passenger elevator. The elevator was built and installed by Elijah Armstrong Otis, who was the founder of Otis Elevators. The Haughwout Building is surrounded by history and famous New York traditional haunts - Columbus Park lies to the south and Washington Square Park is due north.
