Building Description
Built in 1893, the New Era Building is a commercial building located in SoHo. It is eight stories tall and a model example of the Art Nouveau style of the late 19th century. Although there is some debate on the building's origin, the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission states it was designed by Alfred Zucker for designer Augustus D. Juilliard.
Originally the home of the New Era Printing Company, it was soon taken over by Butler Brothers, a mail-order business. A fire severely damaged the building in 1927, causing $1 million in damage. The Butler Brothers gained considerable popularity and goodwill when they refused to important German-made goods during World War I. The New Era Building is surrounded by history and famous New York traditional haunts - Columbus Park lies to the south and Washington Square Park is due north. The nearest subway stop is 0.2 miles away.
