Building Description
The Ford Foundation Building is a history maker, the first office building in Manhattan to have a tree-filled atrium, setting the precedent for a flurry of indoor public spaces in office building around the island. Calling Midtown home, it was designed by architect Kevin Roche and engineer John Dinkeloo, with construction stretching from 1963 to 1968 for a total cost of $16 million.
Made from a concrete and steel frame, the 12-story building touches the outer limits of the modern architecture International style. Most of the building is an office block in the shape of an L which wraps around a winter garden. When the weather is good, there's as much greenery outside as in, including the nearby Tudor City Greens and Ralph Bunche Park, ideal for a breath of fresh air at lunchtime or for a brief bout of exercise before the commute home. Given the international flavor of this part of Manhattan, the cuisine options are as diverse as the flags outside the UN Building.
