Building Description

The historic property at 255-269 W 43 Street was developed in 1922 by real estate magnate Henry Claman. Originally known as the Claman Hotel, the Renaissance Revival tower was designed by Herman Gronenberg and Albert J. H. Leuchtag, as a single men's residence. When the Manger brothers acquired the property in 1922 one floor was reserved for women and the building's name changed to the Times Square Hotel. In 1991 the grand hotel, neglected and in disrepair, was acquired by Breaking Ground as a pioneering permanent residence for low-income and formerly homeless adults with mental illnesses or living with HIV/AIDS. The Times Square, with 652 apartments, is now the flagship supportive housing residence for Breaking Ground's 18 properties.

Residents at 255-269 W 43 Street enjoy 24-hour security and an on-site medical clinic. Shared spaces include a laundry room, computer lab, library, landscaped roof deck, and art studio with rehearsal space. The building is on the National Register of Historic Places, and is convenient to all Midtown mass transportation options. The 8th Avenue and 44th Street station is steps away and serves the A, C, E, N, Q, R, S, 1, 2, 3 and 7 trains. The 8 Avenue and West 43rd Street bus station is even closer and offers access to the M20 and M104 routes. The X21, X22, X30 and X31 lines also serve the area.
