Building Description
The Vladeck Houses at 626 Water Street were one of the earliest public housing projects undertaken by the New York City Housing Authority. Ground was broken on the Lower East Side of Manhattan in September of 1939 and the first residents moved in one year later. Namesake Baruch Charney Vladeck was a member of the original housing board of directors. There are 10 six-story buildings onsite at 626 Water Street that total 813 apartments. The walkways are attractively landscaped with plantings, benches and mature shade trees that are now higher than the apartment rooftops in many cases.
Residents at 626 Water Street are within easy walking distance of Lillian D. Wald Playground, Sol Lain Playground, Henry M. Jackson Playground, and Corlears Hook. The Williamsburg and Manhattan bridges are easily accessible, and the F, M, J, and Z trains are a short walk away. Although not zoned for any particular schools, 626 Water Street belongs to School District 1, with nearby public and private options including P.S. 134, Manhattan Charter School II, P.S. 184, Girls Prep Charter School, University Neighborhood High School, and Explore Envision Charter School.
