New York City’s residential sales market remained strong in 2014, with increased demand recorded across all market segments and rising home prices. Of the five boroughs, Manhattan tops the charts in terms of expensive real estate, according to recent data from PropertyShark.
To see exactly what “pricey” means when talking about New York City residential real estate, we’ve put together a list of the most expensive homes sold in the Big Apple this year. These properties, mostly part of the co-op market, are defined by such characteristics as ultra-exclusive locations, stunning city views, high-class building amenities and swanky interiors – or, to put it in a nutshell, the crème de la crème of urban living.
In one of the most expensive condo sales completed this year, Israel Englander, the founder and chief executive officer of hedge-fund firm Millennium Management LLC, paid a little over $71 million for a high-end apartment at 740 Park Avenue, a luxury cooperative apartment building on the Upper East Side. The price is a new record-breaker for Manhattan co-ops, according to Bloomberg.com, topping the $70 million sale of the late Edgar Bronfman Sr.’s apartment at 960 Fifth Avenue, which is the runner-up in our top 10 most expensive NYC homes of 2014.
Occupying 3rd position in our priciest home transactions list is an impressive apartment at One57, the Extell Development Company’s 90-story Midtown tower at 157 West 57th Street. The 6,240 square-foot condominium is one of 11 full-floor units among the 94 apartments in the glass-sheathed tower designed by Atelier Christian de Portzamparc, as reported by The New York Times. The building’s impressive interiors have been designed by New York-based Danish designer Thomas Juul-Hansen.
