Pelham Bay Neighborhood Guide
The Pelham Bay that was once the body of water in Long Island Sound named for the 17th century English physician and landholder Thomas Pell is gone, filled in with dirt and rubble. But Pelham Bay the neighborhood that grew up in the East Bronx lives on and it looks an awful lot like it always has. The Old World Italians that populated the streets of Pelham Bay have been joined by Latinos and others, but Pelham Bay is still a residential neighborhood where folks come home after a hard day's work and take pride in their houses. That consistency is reflected in the streetscape: block after block of human-scale housing, small yards and a suburban vibe.
Architecture and landmarks
Much of Pelham Bay consists of pre-war structures dating mostly from 1900 until 1940. Colonials predominate with lintels over the windows, and fanlight windows visible on entrance doors. Zoning restrictions enacted early in this century helped slow the replacement of these brick and wood frame houses with lot-swallowing multi-family dwellings. One house that was never in danger of a teardown is the Federal-styled Bartow-Pell Mansion in Pelham Bay Park that has been a National Historic Landmark since 1978 and is now a museum. Also in the park, tucked away in a grove of shady trees on Shore Road, is the Bronx Victory Memorial honoring 947 Bronx soldiers who sacrificed their lives in World War I. Although not widely known, the landscaped plaza is considered one of the City's most impressive monuments.
Transport
The terminal for the No. 6 Line subway train is in Pelham Bay, and the neighborhood has three stations from which commuters can begin the 40-minute ride to Grand Central Terminal. Several bus lines ferry residents about the Bronx and include a regular express service to Manhattan that reaches Midtown in an hour.
Schools
The imposing Neo-Colonial brick Public School 71 on Roberts Avenue greets Pelham Bay elementary students. Herbert H. Lehman High School, a winged structure constructed atop an overpass in 1970, is a college-prep secondary school. Private and parochial schools are common in the neighborhood. One, the Greek-American Institute on Bruckner Boulevard, is the oldest continuously run Greek Orthodox School in the country, educating students through 8th grade since 1912.
Health
The Jacobi Medical Center, the result of America's first partnership between a municipal hospital and a medical school (Albert Einstein College of Medicine) in the 1950s, is just across the Hutchinson Parkway. The immediate area around the complex includes a host of other medical complexes, such as the specialty services of the Montefiore Medical Center and the Bronx Psychiatric Center.
Safety
The 45th Precinct that patrols Pelham Bay reported handling 10.50 crimes per 1,000 residents in the past 12 months. That is a low crime rate enjoyed only by the top 20 percent of New York City's neighborhoods.
Things to do
Pelham Bay residents head for Westchester, Buhre and Crosby Avenues for shopping and dining. Italian and Greek fare rules with chain outlets sprinkled among community staples such as Zeppieri & Sons Italian Bakery (since 1968) and George's Restaurant, a classic diner with Greek and Spanish cuisine.
To work those calories off, New York City's largest park, Pelham Bay Park, is right next door, covering 2,772 acres. The park offers bridle trails, hiking paths, a nature center, ballfields and two golf courses.
There are 13 miles of Long Island Sound coastline, highlighted by man-made Orchard Beach, which is the only public sandy stretch in the Bronx. The colonies of trout lilies in the park's woodlands can be 300 years old and are a cherished marker that spring has arrived for Pelham Bay.
