Building Description

Cooper Eckstut & Associates drew up the plans for Battery Park City to pay respect to the traditions of New York City residential architecture. The Soundings at 280 Rector Place, completed in 1987, brings back the stylings of the early 20th century with two stories of dressed stone supporting seven stories of clean light brick rising to a sharp cornice. A canopied entrance completes the throwback Neo-Georgian appearance interpreted by the architects at Bond Ryder James.

The lobby is appointed with a fireplace and rich leather couches on marble floors, but the interiors of the 121 units are decidedly modern in their amenities. The Soundings offers a mirrored dance room, residents' lounge, billiards room, children's play room, bike room, and secured storage. The doorman, porter and superintendent are 24-hour positions at 280 Rector Place. The Esplanade recreation path at the Hudson River is steps away, and the Number 1 train heading uptown can be caught at the Greenwich station less than one-quarter mile away.
