Riverdale Neighborhood Guide
It must have been an odd sensation to be a Riverdale resident and wake up on New Year's Day 1898 and discover you were now a part of New York City with the advent of Consolidation. Before that time, the hills in the northern regions of the Bronx along the Hudson River were a place where wealthy Manhattanites built fancy country homes to get away from the city. They didn't even use a street grid in the neighborhood - the builders had the luxury of having the serpentine streets follow the contours of the land. Many of those manor houses survive today, but after the construction of the Henry Hudson Bridge across the Spuyten Duyvil Creek in the 1930s, more middle class housing joined them. These new arrivals allowed families to infiltrate the neighborhood, and they now make up about half the population mix. But although legislation made Riverdale a part of New York City, in character it continues to have more in common with the Westchester County and Connecticut suburbs than with its Bronx cousins.
Architecture and landmarks
The Greek Revival-styled Wave Hill was one of the earliest of the country estates built in Riverdale, in 1843 by a lawyer. Mark Twain and Theodore Roosevelt both rented the property through the years; today the fieldstone manor looks over a public botanical garden and outdoor art gallery. Other stone mansions include Stonehurst (1861), Oaklawn (1863), Greyston (1864) and Alderbrook (1880). Fieldston, a private gated community constructed in 1910, is a designated historic district on its own. More Riverdale stone was used to construct the 50-foot high Riverdale-Spuyten Duyvil-Kingsbridge Memorial Bell Tower that stands beside the Henry Hudson Parkway; its bell was cast in 1762 and captured during the Mexican War. Riverdale boasts the usual array of Colonial and Tudor single family home designs from the mid-20th century but the mid-rise apartment buildings that have inched into the neighborhood are of a more recent vintage.
Transport
The No. 1 subway train begins and ends its day in nearby Cortlandt Park - it is a 35-minute ride into the bowels of Manhattan. The Metro-North train takes 25 minutes to reach Grand Central. You can even catch a bus ride into Manhattan from Riverdale.
Schools
Riverdale public schoolers are educated in Spuyten Duyvil. There are many highly respected private schools nearby from which parents can choose.
Health
The well-regarded Montefiore Medical Center is a short distance away on East 210th Street and there are branch medical offices in the neighborhood.
Safety
Riverdale's name has long come up as the safest neighborhood in the Bronx, if not the entire city. The official crime report from the 50th Precinct in the past year: 11.19 crimes per 1,000 residents.
Things to do
Riverdale tucks itself in for the night; there is a small sampling of ethnic restaurants but most foodies' stomachs are filled in Manhattan. Shopping is also something best accomplished elsewhere. Nature and outdoor opportunities are the neighborhood's forte.
Van Cortlandt Park is twice the size of Central Park and the nation's oldest public golf course is barely a 5-iron away. Fishing is plentiful in the city's largest freshwater lake and the Hudson River.
The Raoul Wallenberg Forest boasts leafy walking paths and Seton Park has neighborhood ballfields. Cyclists can jump on their machines and pedal all the way down to Battery Park along the Hudson River, most of the way on the separated two-way bike path of the Manhattan Waterfront Greenway.
