Flatlands Neighborhood Guide

Once an independent town, Flatlands joined the City of Brooklyn in 1896. Today it has a population of just under 65,000, unique housing options, and a wide range of education facilities. Though the commute can be difficult?Flatlands is located on the tip of Brooklyn and there's no subway service directly to the neighborhood?many residents consider this a positive as there isn't as much traffic in Flatlands compared to other Brooklyn neighborhoods.

Architecture and landmarks

The oldest buildings in this neighborhood date from the 1800s and include the Flatlands Dutch Reformed Church and the Lott House, a Dutch colonial home that was once a farmhouse and has a unique gambrel roof. The city bought the house, renovated it, planted hundreds of trees and repaved the streets here. Though there are more rental units in Flatlands than there were just a decade ago, they are still in the minority in this neighborhood. Most housing options consist of attached, semidetached, or detached homes featuring either vinyl siding or stucco, or a combination of the two. The neighborhood includes many two-story homes and it's not uncommon for homes to have both a driveway and a garage. Futuramas are also popular in this neighborhood. They were built mostly in the `50s and consist of a two-family home with a finished basement, which is built under a three-bedroom unit. Typically, the owner rents out one of the units.

Transport

It's true that the Flatlands neighborhood is relatively secluded from the rest of Brooklyn, but it's just a fifteen-minute drive to the Belt Parkway, which can get residents to Long Island, Manhattan, or the malls. The IRT Norstrand Avenue Line of the subway is within walking distance for some residents, and offers access to the 2 and 5 trains. Other public transportation options include taking a local bus to the BMT Brighton Line to pick up the B or Q lines, or to the BMT Canarsie line to pick up the L train. There are also more than a dozen buses, including both local options and express buses that take about an hour to get to Lower Manhattan.

Schools

There is a wide variety of schools within or nearby Flatlands, including two Catholic primary schools (Mary Queen of Heaven and St. Thomas Aquinas), several Catholic high schools (Bishop Ford and St. Edmunds), several yeshivas, public schools including PS 203 that offers a program for gifted children and a number of sports including tennis and basketball, PS 207 which also has a gifted program, IS 78, IS 278, and South Shore High School.

Health

Since Flatlands does not have its own hospital, the closest options are New York Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital in Park Slope, Mount Sinai Brooklyn in Marine Park, and New York Community Hospital in Midwood. There are several private practices in the neighborhood, though many residents travel to nearby neighborhoods to have their medical needs met.

Safety

The Flatlands neighborhood is served by the 63rd Precinct of the New York Police Department, where there were 10.2 reported crimes per 1,000 residents in 2016. This is about average for neighborhoods within Brooklyn and lower than the average stats for neighborhoods throughout New York City.

Things to do

The oldest business in Flatlands is the Marine Florist, which has been in operation for more than a century. Kings Plaza Shopping Center and Marine, which is located at Flatbush and U Avenues, has a movie theater, boat slips, and several anchor stores, including Home Depot and Macy's. Other popular shopping areas in the neighborhood include Utica Avenue, Avenue N, Ralph Avenue, and Flatbush Avenue. There's a four-lane strip of outdoor malls that sell just about everything residents need, and there are several storefronts that sell household goods.

As is the case with most Brooklyn neighborhoods, there's a wide range of culinary options in Flatlands, including Trelawni Place, with its casual dining that includes favorites like artic Cajun salmon; the Fish Eye Bar and Grill, where you can find everything from pasta to curry goat; and late-night options like jerk shrimp and curry crabs at spots along Avenue H.

There is a Flatlands branch of the Brooklyn Public Library and a few parks in the area, including Jacob Joffe Fields and the nearby Marine Park.
