Fresh Meadows Neighborhood Guide

This patch of northeast Queens was once known as Black Stump. These days it carries a more melodic moniker - Fresh Meadows - and the cropland that was the result of all those blackened stumps has been replaced with streets of single-family housing. Many were built for returning World War II veterans to come and raise families in. The planned communities remain orderly and family-oriented. The fact that the neighborhood has no subway stops helps impart a "country life" vibe to Fresh Meadows, a safe and quiet place for those with a car, who enjoy easy access to Grand Central Parkway and the Long Island Expressway.

Architecture and landmarks

Fresh Meadows is studded with Colonials, Tudors and Cape Cods, the hallmarks of 20th century American housing. Some blocks, especially along the main artery of 188th Street, boast brick-faced row houses and apartments. Aggressive zoning has kept the arrival of "McMansions" to a minimum. The Fresh Meadows housing complex, developed by the New York Life Insurance Company in the 1940s, is a landmark in itself and a prime example of a post-World War II community created for the automobile in lockstep with the vision of uber-planner Robert Moses. Many of the residential buildings are Tudor-style, though new housing options are often more modern-looking and stand out from the idyllic neighborhood the original architects had imagined.

Transport

The lack of subway service does not leave one totally stranded half way between Manhattan and Long Island - the Union Turnpike E and F subway lines are a quarter hour bus ride away on the Q46. Fresh Meadows is also on the QM1 and QM1A express bus lines. Count on a 50-60 minute commute to Midtown Manhattan.

Schools

The perennially high-ranked schools of District 26 offer residents excellent education normally associated with the suburbs, but without the taxes. P.S. 26 Rufus King handles pre-kindergarten through Grade 5 and Junior High School 216 George J. Ryan funnels Grades 6 through 8 into three academies: communications, scientific exploration or law and justice. Francis Lewis High School completes the student journey through District 26. St. John's University's Queens Campus is just a few blocks to the southwest.

Health

New York Presbyterian Hospital maintains several specialty branches in Fresh Meadows and Queens Hospital Center is a short drive down the Union Turnpike.

Safety

Fresh Meadows is in the hands of the 107th Precinct. According to crime reports the police handled 7.56 crimes per 1,000 residents in 2016, placing the neighborhood in the lowest quintile of New York City safety rankings.

Things to do

Playing with their children would rank high on most Fresh Meadows residents' list of favorite things to do. Nearly one-third of the neighborhood is of Asian descent, so Thai and Chinese restaurants are commonplace. There is a suburban-style shopping center in the northern blocks, currently anchored by a Kohl's.

Cunningham Park, one of the borough's largest parks at 358 acres, embraces the entire east side of the neighborhood. There are 20 tennis courts and nearly three dozen ball fields in the park. The Vanderbilt Motor Parkway that was built in 1906 as a private toll road has been vehicle-free since 1938 and is now one of the city's best bike and strolling paths.

Fresh Meadows is not a complete cultural wasteland - groups like the Metropolitan Opera, New York Philharmonic and Big Apple Circus come out to Cunningham Park for annual appearances.
