Whitestone Neighborhood Guide

Whitestone is a neighborhood located in the most northern tip of Queens and is sandwiched between the East River and 25th Avenue. According to the most recent census data, just over 40,000 people live in this primarily residential neighborhood that is home to restaurants that have been successful for years, as well as the popular subsection Malba. With short commutes, lots of parks, and highly rated schools, it's not hard to see why Whitestone is popular with families.

Architecture and landmarks

Whitestone boasts numerous housing styles, including Dutch colonials, ranch homes, stucco houses, Tudors, Cape Cods and Victorians, most of which were built between the `20s and `50s. In recent years, teardown renovations are becoming more and more common. There's also a large coop with over 1,000 units that sits on 28 acres, and also includes several pools and a tennis court. This historic neighborhood is home to a number of landmarks, including St. Luke's Roman Catholic Church, Dwarf Giraffe Athletic League, Whitestone Hebrew Centre, and the Grace Episcopal Church, which was built in the mid-19th century and donated by the Francis Lewis family. Perhaps the most well-known landmark in Whitestone is the Russian Orthodox Church of St. Nicholas, which is recognizable by its large blue onion dome, though it was only built in the late `60s.

Transport

There are almost 8,000 one- to two-family homes in Whitestone, which makes it by far the most prevalent type of real estate in the area, though the neighborhood also offers an impressive 3,547 coop units. There are fewer condos (just 240) and a healthy number of units in three- to six-family homes (994). The commercial real estate market is a little dimmer with a total of 32 office buildings, 424 retail units, and 107 buildings zoned for mixed use.

Schools

In total, there are four elementary schools in Whitestone, each of which serves pre-K to 5th grade. The largest of these schools, P.S. 79 Francis Lewis, has more than 1,000 students. There are two junior high options (J.H.S. 194 William Carr and J.H.S. 185 Edward Bleeker) and just a single high school in the neighborhood: Whitestone Academy.

Residents of Whitestone have their choice of medical facilities, including Whitestone Primary Care, which is a member of the New York Presbyterian / Queens physician group, New York Queens Hospital, and a number of private practices.

The 24-hour Cherry Valley Deli and Grill has long been a favorite, and residents have gone to Caldwell Connection to buy musical instruments, get lessons, and pick up records for more than 50 years.

Since Whitestone is on the waterfront, it's common to see public gatherings along the shore, especially at Francis Lewis Park, which is located at the foot of the Bronx-Whitestone Bridge. Residents can play bocce and basketball or rent a kayak there, or just people watch - as weddings and parties take place around them.
