City Island Neighborhood Guide
City Island is a seaside village with a population of fewer than 5,000 people. Officially a part of the Bronx, though, as the name implies, it is an island, this is a quiet, laidback place with only a few stores, restaurants, and limited commerce. That said, residents love their quiet town and say that it's the perfect balance between city living and living in a remote seaside village. Though there are many reasons to recommend this neighborhood, the main issue is a lack of inventory for homebuyers. This neighborhood guide will help you when you browse through City Island homes and apartments for sale by providing useful information on home prices, transportation options, commuting, schools, safety, shopping, top things to do, and architecture. Find out which schools you can find in the area and their rankings, plus essential information on transportation options and crime rates. The real estate market guide for City Island will tell you how many rentals, condos, co-ops and single family homes there are in the area and provide insights on the housing market to help you choose the best neighborhood for your needs.
Architecture and landmarks
The residential streets in City Island run east and west. There is a surprising diversity of architectural styles considering how small this neighborhood is. A walk through the town will uncover bungalows, picture-perfect cottages on tiny 25-feet-wide lots, semidetached homes, shingle-style homes, Victorians, and a variety of other waterfront homes. A trip down City Island Avenue takes residents by a bait supply shop, a few small markets, some gift shops, an art gallery, and a few older churches. There's also a relatively new gated condo community on the waterfront, named On the Sound, which is next to a similar condo community, the Boatyard, built in the 1980s.
Transport
There's an express bus from City Island to Midtown, the BxM8, which only runs twice a day in each direction on weekdays and takes about an hour and fifteen minutes to get there. Commuters may instead choose to take an express bus to the Pelham Bay Park subway station and then get on the 6 train. This takes about 45 minutes. The other option is to drive, and with no traffic that will take about half an hour.
Schools
P.S. 175 serves kids from kindergarten through 8th grade and currently enrolls around 330 students. PS 17 still stands, but today it's home to the City Island Historical Society and Nautical Museum, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Health
Though there are no hospitals within Pelham Gardens, there are many nearby healthcare options including NYC Health + Hospitals Jacobi, Jack D. Weiler Hospital in Morris Park, and Calvary Hospital.
Safety
Technically, City Island is a part of the New York City Police Department's 45th Precinct, where there were 10.01 reported crimes per 1,000 residents in 2016, but the police presence is generally limited to traffic control on busy summer weekends.
Things to do
There's no question that City Island is best known for having incredible seafood - especially their lobster dishes. There are more than 30 restaurants in the neighborhood, including everything from causal restaurants like Johnny's Reef, to the Lobster Box, the Black Whale, which is best known for their desserts, and the high-end French Bistro SK. The Snug, which is an Irish bar connected to the popular City Island Diner, is a popular spot to stop for a libation. Keep in mind that some restaurants close down during winter months, but most stay open all year.
There are a number of historical places to visit in City Island, including the Nautical Museum with its maritime antiques and artifacts - though it's important to remember that it's only open on weekend afternoons. Residents also visit the Samuel Pell Mansion on City Island Avenue and City Island Theater Group produces shows for residents and visitors throughout the year. Boats can be rented during summer months, and there are many places to fish in the area. Just remember to get a fishing license or you risk being fined.
Ambrosini Field has modern playground equipment and a baseball field that can be enjoyed by the public. There's also Hawkins Park, which offers plenty of shade and a noteworthy dolphin sculpture. There is a branch of the New York Public Library, which recently doubled in size during an expansion - and it is still the smallest library in the NYPL system!
