Kingsbridge, located in the northwestern Bronx, is actually a patchwork of three smaller neighborhoods: Kingsbridge itself, Kingsbridge Heights, and Van Cortlandt Village. Sometimes referred to as a subsection of Riverdale - largely due to the fact that the neighborhoods share a zip code - Kingsbridge is spread out over less than a mile but manages to pack quite a punch in such a small space. Architecture and landmarks

There are a variety of architectural types in Kingsbridge, including a row of bungalows that would look at home on the waterfront. Other housing types include modern attached brick houses, glassy high-rise buildings, rowhouses with security grates on their windows, and co-ops, including the Amalgamated Cooperative Houses complex, which was built in 1927 by the Garment Workers Union in a Tudor-esque style. Rezoning laws took effect in 2004 and made it more difficult to build taller condo buildings, though that hasn't stopped them entirely. Unique architectural aspects of this neighborhood include what are known as step streets, which are stairways that have up to 160 steps to get up the slope. There's also a business improvement district that has more than 200 merchants, making it one of the biggest retail shopping districts in the Bronx.

Transport

Times Square is about a 25-minute subway ride from Kingsbridge and those who work on the west side of Manhattan can get there via the 1 train at several different stations. Commuters who need to get to the east side of Manhattan can head to the Marble Hill stop and chose from half a dozen trains heading to Grand Central Terminal during rush hour. This trip takes about 20 minutes. There are more than a dozen buses serving the neighborhood, including local and express buses.

Schools

There are a few options for school-aged children of any age in Kingsbridge. Those in K-8th grade typically attend P.S. 95 or AmPark Neighborhood School, a public school that has a strong focus on the arts. Middle school options include Kingsbridge Academy and IN-Tech Academy, both of which actually serve both middle school and high school youngsters, and then there is the John F. Kennedy High School which is one of the more popular high schools here.

Health

There are quite a few health care options within Kingsbridge or nearby, including the Westchester Dermatology Center, The Allen Pavilion, New York - Presbyterian Allen Hospital, The Jewish Home and Hospital, and Manhattanville Health Care Center.

Safety

Kingsbridge is patrolled by the 50th Precinct of the New York City Police Department. In 2016 there were 10.42 reported crimes per 1,000 residents, which makes it one of the safer neighborhoods in the Bronx.

Things to do

No matter what type of food or drink a person's in the mood for, they're likely to find several options within Kingsbridge. Due to its Irish roots, the neighborhood is home to a wealth of Irish bars, many of which are on Broadway, as well as Gaelic Park Stadium, which was once a well-used stadium for Gaelic football matches but is today used for soccer by Manhattan College.

Favorite eateries in Kingsbridge include Dominican eats at Leche Y Miel Restaurant, residents swear the best chicken wings in town can be found at Bronx Alehouse, and Novelty Nachos is a favorite spot for burgers, pizzas, and - you guessed it - nachos.

The Punch Bowl has long been a favorite dive bar in the area, Kingsbridge Social Club often takes top honors as a cocktail bar, and Mr. McGoo's Pub is a popular spot for a pint.
