Pelham Gardens Neighborhood Guide

The boundaries of Pelham Gardens are not clearly defined, and people within an outside of this boxy neighborhood have different opinions on where it begins and ends. Regardless of who you ask, they're likely to agree that the heart of this mostly residential neighborhood is the intersection of Pelham Parkway North and Stillwell Avenue. Fewer than 5,000 people live here by last count, and many of those who do work in the many nearby medical facilities.

Architecture and landmarks

Pelham Gardens is considered by residents to be a tranquil place, with many streets lined with mature oak trees that create a canopy, further magnifying the impression that this is a truly secluded enclave. There are more brick colonial homes than any other type, and most of those have two stories and are on 50x100 feet lots. It's common to find detached garages, and though it's also common to find homes that are almost a century old, most have been kept up. The oldest home in the entire neighborhood is a home that was built as a farmhouse on the corner of what is now Woodhull Avenue and Fielding Street. Some homes are newer, including those built in the `80s when local roads were extended north and almost 20 acres were added to the neighborhood. Those newer homes are more likely to be semidetached one- or two-family homes. Likewise, a few small apartment buildings can be found, but most homes in the area are owner occupied.

Transport

Pelham Gardens offers uniquely easy access to several major thoroughfares, which means that there are more drivers than average in this neighborhood. When commuting by car, a resident can get to Midtown in about 25 minutes. There are also stops for the 5 and 6 trains on the New York City subway, as well as express buses to those subway stations, and one express bus to Midtown, which takes about an hour.

Things to do

It's true that Pelham Gardens is nearly entirely residential but there are a few places for locals to go. When craving Italian food, Fratelli is a favorite spot, while those with a taste for Greek food are likely to be found at EX Grill NYC. For Jamaican food, stop by Lash West Indian and American Cuisine, and don't forget Simply Seafood for fish. Shopping options within the neighborhood are limited to the necessities, which can be found at chain stores like CVS Pharmacy, the Salvation Army resale store, and GEM Discount Store.

Though the neighborhood itself may not have a lot of options, there are both recreational and commercial options nearby. Bay Plaza Shopping Center, located just northwest of Pelham Gardens, is a popular spot, and both the New York Botanical Gardens and the Bronx Zoo are just a mile or so away.

Though this neighborhood is very flat in general, there's a unique and interesting valley that can be found between Laconia Avenue and Eastchester Road. The lowest point of all is on Seymour Avenue. This is a dip that was actually caused by a glacier thousands of years ago and is a favorite spot for history buffs to visit.
