Wakefield Neighborhood Guide

If you are playing Jeopardy and the revealed answer is "Bronx neighborhood named for the plantation in Virginia where George Washington was born," the question is "What is Wakefield?". There was a time when Wakefield resembled the rolling hillsides of the Father of Our Country's youth along the Rappahannock River, but those farms have been replaced with streets of one- and two-family homes. Pushing against the Westchester County line, Wakefield is as far as you can get from Manhattan in the Bronx, which makes living here more of a suburban experience than an urban vibe. When most of the houses were built in the early 1900s, it was Italians and Irish who came to live here; these days, the cultural axis has tilted towards middle class Jamaicans and West Indians and Hispanics, whose culture permeates the neighborhood.

Architecture and landmarks

The houses of Wakefield are modest, typically of vernacular styling with variations of Colonial and bungalow influences. Brick was a popular building choice, but there are plenty of wood-frame dwellings as well. The best architecture is institutional. Mount Saint Michael Academy, a Catholic boys' school, is a Collegiate Gothic creation from 1926. Redeemer Evangelical Lutheran Church began as a portable house of worship in 1929 and eventually came to land a role in the 1970s Ali McGraw-Ryan O'Neal tearjerker Love Story. The most iconic structure in the neighborhood is the elevated No. 2 subway line whose tracks end abruptly up in the sky at 241st Street.

Transport

The No. 2 subway train begins (or ends) the longest journey from the Bronx into Manhattan in Wakefield. There are four stops in the neighborhood and expect anywhere from 50 to 65 minutes on the train. Buses run not only south through the City but north into Westchester County as well. The BxM11 is the express bus into Manhattan.

Schools

Wakefield boasts five public elementary schools and a pair of public middle schools, but public secondary students must fan out into other neighborhoods. Parochial schools help fill the void, including Mount St. Michael Academy, which is only for boys.

Health

There are several private clinics operating in Wakefield and the 369 beds of the former Our Lady of Mercy Medical Center have been acquired by Montefiore Medical Center and rebranded its North Annex, providing primary and emergency care to neighborhood residents.

Safety

Wakefield is part of the 47th Precinct with 17.33 crimes per 1,000 residents in the past twelve months. That places the neighborhood in the top 40 percent for safety in New York City.

Things to do

Think of suburban life on the Wakefield to-do list. Lawn care is popular in this neighborhood. For shopping, especially of the big box variety, or going to the movies, more people will hop in the car and head to Westchester County than aim for the City. For sticking in the neighborhood, the Caribbean-style shops and eateries will serve up some of the best jerk chicken in the city for starters.

Orchard Beach, the New England clone that is City Island and other pursuits on the waters of Long Island Sound are just to the east. Seton Falls Park offers suburban pleasures like walking in the woods (there is a manmade waterfall) and bird watching - you can try to pick out the thirty species of birds that call the wetlands home.

There is also a playground for the kids. For longer activities, Van Cortlandt Park is nearby with mountain biking trails, ballfields and a century-old public golf course.
