DUMBO Neighborhood Guide
Does DUMBO have it all? Some would say so, thanks to the sweeping views of Manhattan and the chic loft spaces you see everywhere you look. A true mixture of sass and class, DUMBO is hip, historic, and highly in demand. With a mix of converted warehouses and vintage lofts, the skyline views are simply unmatched in most of New York City. You'll find trendy bars and shops on every corner, beautifully manicured green spaces on the waterfront, and incredible, historic enclaves such as the cobblestone streets of Vinegar Hill.
Architecture and landmarks
DUMBO is today considered one of the premier districts in NYC for artists, as evidenced by a cluster of art galleries including the famous Klompching Gallery and its non-profit counterpart, St. Ann's Warehouse. DUMBO was originally an industrial district that's only been transformed into a residential area in the past few decades. As a result, the architectural styles are diverse and include everything from Greek Revival to converted lofts. One of the most popular landmarks in DUMBO is the extant tracks from the trolley car that used to travel the cobblestone streets.
Transport
Nearby subway stations are located on High Street on the IND Eighth Avenue Line (A and C trains) and at York Street on the IND 6th Avenue Line (F train). Bus service includes the B25, B67, and B69 lines, and ramps and staircases allow for pedestrian and bike traffic from DUMBO across the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges. The East River Ferry connects DUMBO to Manhattan via the Fulton Landing.
Schools
Parents have their choice of public or private elementary, middle, and high schools in the area surrounding DUMBO. PK through 5th grade education is zoned for PS 307 in Vinegar Hill, and there's also Satellite West Middle School within walking distance. Several high schools focusing on either science, technology, law or the arts are in nearby Downtown Brooklyn, and the Gelsey Kirkland Academy of Classical Ballet on Jay Street is one of the best ballet schools in the nation.
Health
There is no hospital in DUMBO itself, but Mount Sinai has a nearby location in Brooklyn Heights. There are dozens of medical offices, urgent care clinics, and alternative medicine options in the neighborhood, as well as private doctors' offices.
Safety
DUMBO is located in the 84th precinct where there were a reported 22.7 crimes per 1,000 people in 2015. This precinct is among the least safe in Brooklyn.
Things to do
Though DUMBO is one of the most popular and highly-sought after neighborhoods in Brooklyn, there has yet to be an influx of nightlife venues or fine dining options. This may be an advantage for residents who want to keep the neighborhood quiet, but a disadvantage for excitement seekers. That said, there are plenty of charming, low-key eateries including Love & Dough, with their Neapolitan specialties, Pedro's Mexican Bar and Restaurant, a family-spot best known for their unique sandwiches, and Archway Cafe, which recently added dinner service to their already popular breakfast and brunch service.
Sports fans gather at The Bridges to watch the big game and enjoy one of numerous draft beers on tap, and the Olympia Wine Bar has long been a favorite of those seeking an affordable glass of wine and an incredible view. What DUMBO lacks in nightlife it makes up for in shopping options, including the famous Trunk, a boutique that sells clothing, furniture, and jewelry from local designers and artists, and P.S. Bookshop, which buys and sells rare books on every topic you can imagine.
The Brooklyn Bridge Park is located in DUMBO along the East River and is a favorite spot for views of Manhattan as well as rides on the indoor merry-go-round. There isn't a NYC Public Library branch in DUMBO, but there are several in nearby Brooklyn Heights.
