East Flatbush Neighborhood Guide

The population of East Flatbush is over 90 percent African-American but that does not mean this is a neighborhood lacking in diversity. East Flatbush residents are not just African-North American but African-Caribbean too - Grenadians, Jamaicans, Dominican, Panamanians, St. Lucians, Haitians, Guyanese, Bajans, Trinidadians, Vincentians and Cubans are some of the folks living here. Each group contributes its own unique culture to the East Flatbush experience. Back in the day this part of central Brooklyn was called Rugby but the farms and villages eventually gave way to a more urban environment. You can still find big trees that will fill the sidewalks with leaves in the fall but East Flatbush is more city than suburb.

Architecture and landmarks

East Flatbush is a bastion of low-rise architecture with blocks of attached houses. You never know what you may find as you turn the corner, a row of Queen Annes or a collection of brick Tudors or walk-ups with Neo-Colonial accents. Make that turn at Clarendon Road and Ralph Avenue and you will find the Wyckoff House which was raised by Pieter Wyckoff in 1652. The frame Dutch saltbox is considered the earliest example of its type in the country and the oldest house in New York City. Holy Cross Cemetery occupies most of central East Flatbush; its burials began in 1846 when Manhattan banned graves on the island. Notable ecclesiastical architecture can also be found in the dignified Romanesque stylings of the Mt. Zion Church of God 7th Day on 37th Street, built as a synagogue in 1928. Erasmus Hall Academy on Flatbush Avenue traces its roots back to 1786 but it became a New York City landmark when architect C.B.J. Snyder created the Erasmus Hall High School that became a Collegiate Gothic-styled prototype for hundreds of subsequent schools.

Transport

By one reckoning the longest subway commute to Manhattan Island from any neighborhood in the five boroughs is from East Flatbush - although you're only talking about a minute or two more than many other rides. That leisurely 48-minute journey will be on the 2 and 5 trains with stops along Nostrand Avenue. Many buses prowl the corridors of East Flatbush, including an express option to Manhattan.

Schools

Educating the young people of East Flatbush is the purview of District 17. The destination for most is Samuel J. Tilden High School, dating originally from 1927. The venerable public high school is now an education complex housing the Cultural Academy for the Arts and Sciences, the Kurt Hahn Expeditionary Learning School, and It Takes A Village Academy.

Health

Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center is a full-service teaching hospital offering sub-specialty medicine and surgical services with 303 beds. Just a few blocks down Winthrop Street the SUNY Downstate Medical Center includes the College of Medicine, which is the largest medical school in the state; it includes the 376-bed University Hospital of Brooklyn. Also on campus is the NYC Health + Hospitals/Kings County which started as Long Island Hospital in 1860. It opened the country's first trauma center over a century ago and is still considered the best such facility in the city.

Safety

East Flatbush is part of the 67th Precinct of the NYPD. The force handles 1.0048 crimes per 1,000 residents, placing it in the top 40th percentile of safety for city neighborhoods.

Things to do

The Caribbean culture pulsing through East Flatbush expresses itself most prominently in the abundance of island-inspired eateries. That international vibe spills over into the markets and family-run shops on Utica Avenue and Church Avenue and Flatbush Avenue.

Brooklyn College, sometimes tagged "the poor man's Harvard," is a cultural destination for live performances. In addition to its leafy campus and the Holy Cross Cemetery, which makes for a great stroll in the outdoors, East Flatbush shares a long boundary with bountiful Prospect Park.

Pocket parks in the neighborhood include Wingate Park, named for a co-founder of the National Rifle Association, with ballfields, playgrounds and hard-surfaced courts and tree-filled Paerdegat Park with benches and walking paths.
