Fort Greene Neighborhood Guide
Fort Greene is well-known as a favorite Brooklyn spot for both farmers' markets and flea markets. With tree-lined streets, a wide range of upscale eateries, and a plethora of parks, it's no wonder that Brooklynites are flocking to this neighborhood. The short commute of just 20 minutes to the Financial District via subway, and only 28 minutes to Times Square, also makes it a dream come true for commuters who want a safer, more relaxed alternative to other New York neighborhoods.
Architecture and landmarks
A walk through Fort Greene reveals many buildings constructed in the mid-19th century Italianate architectural style, as well as the Eastlake style. Most buildings in this neighborhood are very well maintained and preserved and the streets are majestically tree lined. Most housing is located in low-rise buildings that bring to mind the NYC architecture most visitors expect from years of seeing New York only as a movie set. There are several landmarks in Fort Greene, including Williamsburgh Savings Bank Tower, which spent more than 80 years with the title of the tallest building in Brooklyn. It's also home to Fort Greene Park, the very first park in Brooklyn, which was once named Washington Park. This famous park is best known for being the home of the Prison Ship Martyrs' Monument, which honors more than 11,000 patriots who died in British prison ships during the Revolution.
Transport
Public transportation to Midtown Manhattan takes just under half an hour. The M train takes commuters to Midtown, while the J and Z train takes them to Lower Manhattan. The L train, which can be picked up along Wyckoff Avenue, takes riders to 14th Street in Manhattan.
Schools
Families with school-age children will have their pick of schools, including public schools like the Academy of Arts and Letters on Adelphi Street, and charter schools that require students to take Specialized High School Admission Tests, like Brooklyn Technical High School.
Health
The Brooklyn Hospital Center, with reasonable hours and easy access via public transportation, is located within Fort Greene. Other neighborhood health options include private practices, an urgent care clinic, and alternative care physicians.
Safety
Fort Greene is covered by the 88th Precinct of the New York Police Department. In 2016 there were 16.72 crimes per 1,000 residents in this precinct. This puts it within the safer half of New York City neighborhoods.
Things to do
Foodies flock to DeKalb Avenue because of its well-known designation as Fort Greene's "restaurant row," but popular restaurants are located throughout the neighborhood. Madiba Restaurant is an unusual option, with an informal dining room inspired by South African traditions, Colonia Verde has weekly pig roasts on Sundays, and Habana Outpost offers Cuban food in a communal atmosphere. Walter's, a popular micropub, is famous for their lunch and brunch, Lulu & Po offers exceptional takes on American food, and Olea is known for their incredible tapas. There are plenty of bars and pubs but visitors shouldn't expect this to be a non-stop party scene. Instead, spots like Red Lantern Bicycles offer low-key cocktail and beer options with outdoor seating.
Brooklyn Flea, which is held every Saturday April through November, is an eclectic combination of typical second-hand swap meet fare and food galore. Other popular shopping options include women's clothing stores like Cloth, Moshood Creations, and Uniqlo. The arts are well represented in Fort Greene as well, with popular destinations like the Brooklyn Academy of Music (the oldest continuously-operating performing arts center in the entire city), Greenlight Bookstores, and MoCADA.
Fort Greene Park, a 30-acre park in the middle of the neighborhood, offers wide open spaces that residents use to celebrate everything from weddings to birthdays. .
