Marine Park Neighborhood Guide
Named after the largest park in Brooklyn, Marine Park is mostly residential, though it does border a business district found along Flatbush Avenue. The population here is around 30,000, and most homes are owner occupied. With a wide range of beautiful single family homes, good schools, access to a 500+ acre park, and relatively low crime statistics, it's a popular choice for families. However, the lack of public transportation can be a sticking point for some.
Architecture and landmarks
Marine Park is known for its clean and tidy blocks, most of which are lined with narrow homes that often have red brick facades and slate roofs. Most of the homes in this area were built in the `20s and `30s and are owner occupied. Co-ops are rare here, though there are a few, especially in the six-story communities that can be found on Burnett Street. There are a few condo buildings, including the three-story community at Hendrickson Street and Avenue V, which was built in the mid-`80s. For those who want to live in Brooklyn, but still crave a backyard, garage, and even a porch, Marine Park could be the answer. It's common for streets to be lined with trees, to see lush landscaping, and for iron gates to adorn front yards. Each block seems to have its own personality, whether it's Tudor or Victorian, but one thing is common to most streets: homes are built very close together.
Transport
Marine Park doesn't have a subway service. However, commuters can take a bus to East 16th Street and pick up the Q train. A trip from Marine Park to Times Square takes about an hour. There's also an express bus that goes straight to Manhattan and takes about one hour and twenty minutes.
Schools
There are two public elementary schools in Marine Park (PS 222 and PS 207) and one public junior high school (JHS 278). Many students from these schools go on to James Madison High School, which is located in nearby Madison and has higher than average test scores on SATs.

Most shops here are of the functional variety, including grocery stores, and hardware stores. Those who want more recreational shopping are likely to head to the other side of Flatbush to visit Kings Plaza Shopping Center.
Many of the activities in the area are related to the park, including the Salt Marsh Nature Center, with its many trails through beautiful meadows. Kayaks can be rented from Wheel Fun Rentals, and there's even an area at the end of Gerritsen Avenue where you'll find sunbathers on nice afternoons. There's also the 18-hole Marine Park Golf Course, which is open to the public but can be expensive.
