Far Rockaway Neighborhood Guide

Far Rockaway, Queens is located on the easternmost section of the Rockaway Peninsula. Once one of the most popular summer getaways for actors and other celebrities, and home to three dazzling theaters, today the neighborhood is much quieter and you're more likely to see a family on an afternoon beach walk than a celebrity dipping their toes. Recent redevelopment has helped breathe new life into this quiet, laidback area, though long-term residents aren't all thrilled about the changes.

Architecture and landmarks

There are a number of landmarks in the area, including the Far Rockaway Beach Bungalow Historic District, and a number of buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places: Russell Sage Memorial Church, the United States Post Office, and Trinity Chapel. The streets in this neighborhood are mostly one ways and are incredibly narrow - with cars around they can be interesting to navigate! Residents embrace the strikingly diverse home styles in the area, including Queen Annes next to Dutch Colonials with wood frames, and 1900s shingle-style homes next to bungalows. Many original homes have been adapted to two-family homes, and white fences are popular in the area. According to the most recent census, more than one-third of the housing stock consisted of buildings with more than 50 units.

There are three buses to Long Island in Far Rockaway (N31, N32, and N33), access to the A train, and a Long Island Rail Road stop on the eastern side of the neighborhood. The LIRR requires a transfer at the Jamaica station, but still gets riders to Penn Station in just under an hour during rush hour. There are also four local buses in the neighborhood.
