Floral Park Neighborhood Guide
Named for the flower farms that were once present in the area, Floral Park is primarily made up of homes that were originally built for use by soldiers returning from the Second World War. Veterans still make up about 10% of the population, and though the flowers are largely gone, the streets are still tree-lined and the landscaping is largely lush. An incorporated village on Long Island, Floral Park's population is just under 16,000 people.
Architecture and landmarks
Most housing in Floral Park is made up of detached single-family homes, and the most common architectural styles are Capes, wooden colonials, and brick ranches. Newer homes are more likely to have a Mediterranean style and there are a few attached multifamily homes. Many homes in the area were built on lots 40 x 100 specifically for returning soldiers, and these tended to be built as three-bedroom, one-bath homes, though owners have often added additional bathrooms and finished the basements. Since houses here are almost entirely made up of single family homes, someone looking to live in a neighborhood like Floral Park yet also live in an apartment has only one option: North Shore Towers in nearby Glen Oaks, with its 33-stories and underground shopping.
Transport
There is no direct subway service to Floral Park, but commuters do have options. The Q43 and Q36 buses go to the Jamaica subway station, where riders can pick up the F train, and an express bus in the mornings takes Floral Park riders directly to Midtown in about an hour and 20 minutes. There's also the QM6, which takes just over an hour to get to Midtown, though lucky residents near the border of Nassau county can walk to the Long Island Rail Road Station and take a train into midtown in just 35 to 40 minutes. There are numerous options for drivers too, including Cross Island Parkway, Long Island Expressway, Grand Central, and Southern State.
Schools
Floral Park has numerous highly rated schools, including two high schools (Floral Park Memorial High School and Sewanhaka High School), three elementary schools (including public schools John Lewis Childs School and Floral Park-Bellerose School, as well as the private Our Lady of Victory Elementary School), and a number of middle schools.
Health
The closest hospital to Floral Park is Long Island Jewish Medical Center located in New Hyde Park. Since there are limited private practices in this neighborhood, most residents travel to other neighborhoods for medical appointments.
Safety
Floral Park is overseen by the 105th Precinct of the New York City Police Department. In 2106, there were about 10 crimes committed per 1,000 residents. This makes Floral Park one of the safest neighborhoods in the city.
Things to do
Floral Park's main street is Hillside Avenue, with its Indian shops and restaurants. Other roads with shops and eateries include Jericho and Union Turnpike. Floral Park Village includes a quaint little downtown just south of Jericho on Tulip Avenue.
One of the major attractions in the neighborhood is the Queens County Farm, which has both seasonal events for holidays like Easter and Halloween, and also antique car shows. In the fall, this venue is home to the Queens County Fair. Residents who want to head out for a run typically use Cunningham Park, which encompasses more than 350 acres and includes ball fields, playgrounds, and tennis courts, or the jogging path on the Old Vanderbilt Motor Parkway. Alley Pond Park, a 665-acre park with unique trails and a bird sanctuary, is a short distance away as well.
Floral Park has its own newspaper, the Floral Park Dispatch, and is near two branches of the Queens public library: The Glen Oaks Branch and the Bellerose Branch.
