Jamaica Estates Neighborhood Guide

Constructed in the early 1900s, Jamaica Estates is unlike most neighborhoods in Queens. With grassy hills, beautifully pruned forests, winding streets, and homes on huge lots, it looks more like a suburban neighborhood than it does a part of New York City - and that's no accident. The developers who created it wanted to build a luxurious retreat from Manhattan and that's exactly what it is. Residences are more like mansions than homes, and there is very little industry in the primarily residential neighborhood.

Architecture and landmarks

The majority of homes in Jamaica Estates were built in the early- to mid-1900s, though there has been some recent condo development. The estates in this neighborhood are designed in a wide range of styles, from Tudors to Victorian. One thing that's common to almost all the single-family-residences here is a large lot - which is relatively unheard of in New York City. The most notable landmarks in the area are the Queens Museum of Art and the Queens Wildlife Center.

Transport

The neighborhood is served by the New York City's IND Queens Boulevard Line at the Jamaica / 179th Street Terminal and the 169th Street station, both of which have access to the F train. There are also eight local bus lines and half a dozen express buses to Manhattan, which also stop on Union Turnpike.

Schools

There are two public schools within Jamaica Estates: PS/IS 178 Holliswood School and PS 131 Abigail Adams School. There are numerous private schools including the all-girls Mary Louis Academy, Immaculate Conception School, Summit School, Yeshiva University High School for Girls, and the U.N. International School - Queens Campus.

Health

Though there's no hospital in Jamaica Estates, there are numerous medical centers including the Jamaica Hospital Medical Center, Utopia Center, Queens Medical Associates, and Union Medical Care. There is also an urgent care facility and a handful of private practices within the neighborhood.

Safety

Jamaica Estates is located in the 107th precinct, which had an average of 7.31 crimes per 1,000 residents in 2015. This makes it one of the safest neighborhoods in all of New York City.

Things to do

Since Jamaica Estates is primarily a residential area, you shouldn't expect a huge variety of restaurants, nightlife, or shopping. Of course, Manhattan is just a short subway ride away and the nearby neighborhoods of Flushing and Fresh Meadows offer a wide variety of things to do as well.

Within Jamaica Estates, the most popular and well-established quick-service restaurants are Amina Thai, Gan Da Sushi Japanese Cuisine, Tierras Centro Americanas, Crown Fried Chicken, Para Ti Colombia Con Sabor, and BBQ Village Palace. Singas Famous Pizza is the long-established favorite pizza spot in the area. You can stop for a cup of coffee at Richie's Place Coffee Shop. There are several grocery stores and mini marts in the area.

Jamaica Estates is a planned development that was designed specifically to incorporate trees and greenery into its ambiance. The efforts were successful and residents will find plenty of paths, small parks, and old oak, maple, elm and chestnut trees. The effect is doubled by the Hillcrest Golf Course located on the neighborhood's borders.
