Malba Neighborhood Guide

Actually a subsection of the upper-middle class Whitestone section of Queens, Malba was once described by The New York Times as one of the few "elite enclaves" still left in the borough. Known for its roomy lots, waterside homes and big historic houses, it is an expensive neighborhood to get into but one that is highly appreciated by those who live there. With short commutes and few instances of crime, it's one of the most sought-after neighborhoods in Queens.

Architecture and landmarks

One of the most unique aspects of Malba's architecture is that only detached homes can be built there. As a result, there are two basic categories on the housing market: older single-family homes that were built between the 1920s and 1950s, and newer homes that are much larger. The most common styles for the older homes are high ranches and colonials, while you're most likely to find new houses designed in Mediterranean styles. Most of the residential housing market in Malba consists of large homes. Landmarks in the area mostly consist of churches, some of which were built in the mid-19th century: St. Luke's Roman Church, Whitestone Hebrew Centre, Russian Orthodox Church of St. Nicolas, and the Grace Episcopal Church.

Transport

It takes just half an hour to get to Midtown Manhattan from Malba on the QM2 express bus. For those that drive, it's just five minutes to the Bronx and ten minutes to Nassau County. Though the public transportation options are limited in Malba itself, there are numerous public transportation options within walking distance in Whitestone.

Schools

Most children in the Malba neighborhood attend private schools. There are several programs at the Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Elementary School in nearby Whitestone, including options for prekindergarten through 8th grade as well as for two and three year olds. The closest high school is St. Francis Preparatory School, which is located in Fresh Meadows and has some of the highest SAT averages of any school in the city. Malba is zoned for Public School 79.

Health

The hospital closest to Malba is the New York Presbyterian Queens Hospital, located in Flushing. For non-emergency services, many residents visit the North Shore LIJ Medical Center in Murray Hill, which has some of the highest ratings of any medical facility in the city.

Safety

The 109th Precinct of the New York City Police Department has jurisdiction over Malba. There were 8.2 crimes per 1,000 residents in the neighborhood in 2016. These stats make it one of the top five safest neighborhoods in New York City.

Things to do

Malba earns its stripes as a unique community by offering small-town inspired activities throughout the year, including a yearly beachfront luau - complete with roasted pig - and a yearly hot dog party / vintage car show in the Malba Field and Marine Club. For those who want to take a break from it all, the popular Spa Castle offers more than 100,000 square feet of Korean spa treatments. Because of the residential nature of this neighborhood, it's not a top choice for shopping, eating, or recreation. However, it's just a few blocks away from the College Point Shopping Center, which is home to the chain stores you'd expect at a mall. There are also many hip eateries in the Whitestone neighborhood.

Many visitors are surprised by the lack of beaches and the few public spaces along the waterfront. However, it's a short trip to either Powell's Cove Park or Whitestone, both of which offer public access to the water. Of course, Manhattan is also just a 30-minute bus ride away, which makes Malba a great starting point for those who want to take in everything the city has to offer.

Until the mid-1980s, the streets in Malba were privately owned. Today they're owned by the city, but the unevenness in upkeep is due to the fact that different streets once had different owners.
