Middle Village Neighborhood Guide
Middle Village is one of Queens' oldest neighborhoods, situated in the central section of the borough. The first growth spurt occurred when Manhattan outlawed burials on the island in 1851 and church groups traipsed over here to buy up land here for cemeteries - which later turned into one of Middle Village's prime landmarks.
Architecture and landmarks
You will often spot a house in Middle Village that could be described as "high vernacular" - where families have lived in ordinary tract housing for so many generations that they have been built up into mini-mansions. Otherwise it is your standard 20th century single-family home mix of Colonials and Capes. Historic cemeteries in the neighborhood include St. John's, a resting place for an overwhelmingly Catholic population; Lutheran All Faiths Cemetery; Mount Olivet Cemetery; the Fresh Pond Crematory and Columbarium, the nation's third oldest crematory. An eclectic assortment of those who rest in Middle Village include Lucky Luciano, John Gatti, Mario Cuomo, Lou Gehrig, Charles Atlas of bodybuilding fame, pop photographer Robert Mapplethorpe, J.P. Morgan and Donald Trump's parents, Fred and Mary Anne. The Frank Lang Building at Metropolitan Avenue and 69th Street is an aging Art Deco commercial building with gargoyles hanging off the facade.
Transport
The commute to Midtown is approximately 30 minutes with the M train on the New York Subway. Metropolitan Avenue in Middle Village is the terminal station, so you will have your choice of seats in the morning. For bus transportation the QM24, QM 25 and QM 34 are all express routes into Manhattan. Local lines include Q 29, Q38, Q47, Q54, and Q67.
Schools
Middle Village elementary students are educated in P.S. 49, P.S. 87 and P.S. 128. J.H.S 119 in Glendale and J.H.S. 93 in Ridgewood are the destinations for middle schoolers. Most high school kids matriculate at Grover Cleveland High School in Ridgewood where three in every four students will go on to college.
Health
For most specialty care and hospital treatments, residents need to go to facilities in nearby Forest Park, Ridgewood and elsewhere. In 2015, Centers Health Care cut the ribbon on its first walk-in urgent care facility in Middle Village with open doors from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. seven days a week.
Safety
The safety of Middle Village is the responsibility of the 104th Precinct, which reported 8.3 crimes per 1,000 residents in 2016, which is in the lowest quintile for reported illegal activity in the City.
Things to do
Funtopia on Metropolitan Avenue is a one-stop family entertainment destination with a three-level playground, arcade games, bumper cars and kiddie rides. After the fun dies down, Metropolitan Avenue is Middle Village's go-to shopping and dining center.
For a dash of theater, Beari Productions community theater company operates out of Trinity Lutheran Church. Juniper Valley Park began life as a swamp and has done duty as a farm, a dump and a peat moss mine.
Since the 1930s when the City acquired the property to cover back taxes from notorious gambler Arnold Rothstein it has been Middle Village's park. The 55-acre space boasts walking paths, a wading pool, ball fields and the requisite bocce courts for the Italian game that is passed down through generations of villagers.
